Bad Little Trail Run 2019

Join Downeast Coastal Conservancy and Bold Coast Runners and wind through the woods and along the river in this trail running event through the Machias River Preserve to celebrate conservation in our community and help raise awareness for the protection of Downeast Maine's wild places.  The Bad Little Trail Run is named from the Passamaquoddy word "Machias" meaning Bad Little Falls in reference to the falls on the Machias river.

This event offers races at the 2.5 mile and 7 mile distances.  Both begin in Whitneyville on the Sunrise Trail and cross the Machias River on the old railroad bridge. They then follow the Homestead Trail to where it joins the multiuse Sunrise Trail. At that point the courses split.  The 2 milers go straight across and turn right on the Machias River Heritage Trail to return to Whitneyville while the 7 milers turn left and follow the Sunrise Trail towards Machias. On reaching the paved road they turn right and right again almost immediately back onto the Preserve trails and return along the entire Machias River Trail to finish in Whitneyville. The two courses are mostly single track trail with stretches along the river, under giant hemlocks, through grassy swales, over rocks and roots, bog bridges, some possible wet holes and across a beaver dam.

Both races start and end in Whitneyville, followed by post-race drinks, food, awards ceremony and general celebration complete with fire pit.  Your race entry fees include participation in either the 7 mile run or 2.5 mile run/walk as well as the post-race celebrations and awards ceremony.  All runners will receive a commemorative item (probably a hat sporting the race and DCC logos) and finishers will also receive a small award plaque.

The Bad Little Trail Run is one of 6 races in the Downeast Conservation Trail Race Series put on by a coalition of 6 Downeast conservation organizations working to conserve Downeast Maine’s natural environment. These unique races take place on community supported nature and wildlife preserves across Downeast Maine from Orland to Baring and runners finishing 5 or more of these races are eligible for series awards and prizes.  See the race series page: Downeast Conservation Trail Race Series for details.
