White Out Weekend

Thrill, entertain, amuse—all synonyms for the LGBTQ White Out Weekend (also known as WOW) at Sunday River. In fact, we're so devoted to WOWing our guests that we host this annual weekend in association with OutRyders, New England's largest LGBTQ ski and snowboard club.

During White Out Weekend, we deliver eight peaks of great skiing and riding with the most dependable snow in New England. At its core, WOW is all about good times with friends. And, as the name suggests, this weekend is full of special events and parties. We'll have more awesome details to come as the event gets closer, but check out what's planned so far below.

OutRyders is New England's largest gay and lesbian ski and snowboard club. They're all about great friends, great mountain fun, and great times together at off-mountain social events (and they get great trip deals too!). Formed in 2001, OutRyders is a nonprofit, all volunteer-run organization.

Tough Mountain Challenge

Tough Mountain Challenge

A Wicked Dirty 5K

If you want to run 10 miles in the company of 10,000 other people and wait in half-hour lines at each obstacle, you'll find other events where you can do just that. If you want to suffer for hours and risk life and limb, you can find those races too.

But if you're looking for something different - something as fun as it is tough without the ego and the crowds - welcome to the Tough Mountain Challenge, an adventure obstacle race that tackles the alpine terrain of Sunday River with over 20 fun, challenging, and muddy obstacles.

This event sells out every year and registration is open for 2020Be sure to join the party at Friday night's free Big Ass Bash, cheer on your friends Saturday, and sign your kids up for Sunday's Mini Mountain Challenge. Master of the Mountain

Master of the Mountain

A One of a Kind Challenge Benefitting the River Fund

Are you a Master of the Mountain? You'll be put to the test during this event that combines the excitement of downhill skiing with the precision of a timed road rally and enduro challenge—all while raising money to support the youth in the Sunday River region.

During the Master of the Mountain Challenge, participants with advanced to expert skills are asked to ski to a series of checkpoints on Sunday River's slopes. This timed event aims for contestants to ski certain trails at a controlled, yet aggressive pace, and the goal is to come as close to the pre-determined target time without going under. Target times will be posted on the top of each run to help you gauge your pace. Remember: only one winner will be crowned the Master of the Mountain. Do you have what it takes?

There will be two categories: elite and advanced. Each category will consist of eight trails spread out over eight peaks. Checkpoints will be positioned at the start of the designated trail, and at the lift at the base of that trail. There will be no timing between segments or the lift rides. The challenge starts in the White Cap Base Area at 9AM, but how you approach this challenge is entirely up to you. Each participant will be chipped so that your timing can be tracked. You will have four hours total to complete the course.

The objective is to come as close to the pre-determined time per trail without going under. However, you won't find out the target time until you reach the top of that trail to start your run. While the pace is likely to be challenging, it is not designed to be reckless. The one trail you can ski as fast as possible (while remaining in control)? The giant slalom course on Race Area, of course!

Santa Sunday

Celebrate the arrival of winter and the upcoming holiday season with more than 250 Santas cruising down to South Ridge. All money raised goes towards the River Fund. Santas must be in full Santa-attire. This signature Sunday River event kicks off the holiday season in style.

How does it work?

250 pre-registered Santas arrive at the resort in full attire, beard included. Not only is this event photo-worthy and has been featured on the likes of the Travel Channel, but it's for a good cause too. Last year, the in-hand donations made by participating Santas helped raise over $3,000 for the River Fund, a non-profit organization that supports youth education and recreation.

All pre-registered participants can check-in on Sunday, December 8, between 7:30-10:30AM at Discovery Center next to the South Ridge Lodge. Santas who participate in the 11AM photo shoot will receive an additional lift ticket valid through December 20, 2019. The photo shoot will take place slopeside at South Ridge and will last approximately 45 minutes. Pre-registered participants must arrive at check-in wearing all of the following items: a red Santa hat with white pompom, a red Santa jacket, red Santa pants, a Santa beard.  The lift ticket you receive at check-in is only valid until 11AM. To continue skiing or riding for the day, you will need to show up at the scheduled photo shoot at 11AM slopeside at South Ridge dressed in your Santa attire. At the conclusion of the photo shoot, a ticket valid through December 20, 2019, will be issued.

Spectators should also get to South Ridge by 11AM to get a good view of the Santas.

North American Wife Carrying Championship

You might've carried your wife across the threshold, but it's time to take it up a notch. The North American Wife Carrying Championship tasks couples with crossing a 278-yard obstacle course--over hurdles, through a watery mud pit, and up an unsteady sand hill--all for the hopes of winning the wife's weight in beer and five times her weight in cash.

The 20th annual event will take place on Saturday, October 12, during Sunday River Resort's annual Fall Festival Weekend. This is a classic event that you won't want to miss, whether you're carrying, being carried, or watching the madness unfold.
