The 17th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship® kicked off at 11AM on Saturday, October 8 during our annual Fall Festival weekend. The competition drew thousands of spectators to the grass-covered slopes of Sunday River each year and receives worldwide media attention as teams compete for fame, fortune, and a chance to compete at the World Championships in Finland the following summer.

Wife Carrying: A History

The legend behind the North American Wife Carrying Championship is based on 19th century Finnish legend "Ronkainen the Robber" who had high qualifications for the men he accepted into his band. To prove their worth, men had to compete through a difficult course with a heavy sack (or woman grabbed from neighboring villages) on their back.

The first modern day wife-carrying event was held in Finland in 1991 and foreign contestants were admitted in 1995. Qualifying events are also held in Australia, Sweden, and Estonia. The North American Wife Carrying Championship was founded in 1999 by Sunday River, which today is the organization that owns the event and serves as the sanctioning body for the United States and Canada to determine the North American winners of the World Championships. Additional information is available on wife-carrying.org

How It Works

The course at Sunday River is built to international specifications at 278 yards in length;with two dry obstacles and one water obstacle. The race format varies slightly from the World Championship in that there is no minimum weight limit for the wife, and the winner is determined by a head-to-head final race rather than being determined only by the finishing time in the competitor's initial round. Additionally, the North American course is run on uneven ground with elevation changes, as compared to the World course, which is predominantly flat. Helmets are not required for the North American Championship.

Wife carrying is based on husband-and-wife teams racing with the husband carrying the wife through a regulation length obstacle course featuring log hurdles, sand traps, and the always popular "widow maker" water hazard. The fastest two teams from the qualifying round then compete head-to-head in a final heat. Competing couples do not have to be married, though they must be comprised of a man and a woman and both must be at least 21 years old to enter. How the wife is carried is the competitors' choice, though most use the "Estonian carry" where the female participant holds the male around the waist and tightens her legs around his neck, thereby freeing his hands. Watch our How To video to really get the hang of it.

The winning couple takes home the wife's weight in Goose Island Oktoberfest beer, five times her weight in cash, and an entry into the World Championship, which takes place in Finland the following summer.

Disc Golf Tournament, Maine Brew Fest ~ Sunday River

Sunday River Disc Golf Tournament

September 9, 2017

Do you dominate at doglegs? Are you experienced in elevation changes? Can you maneuver a disc methodically in and around trails, like a true Ace? If so, the Sunday River Disc Tournament on Saturday, September 9, 2017,  is calling on you and your partner.

Open to pros, experienced, and amateurs, this duals tournament involves cash prizes for the top teams and takes place on our brand new 18-hole disc golf course during our first-ever Maine Brew Fest Weekend, September 8 - 10, 2017 .

Teams made up of 2 pair off with another team in each heat and follow a scramble format.

Whats a Scramble?

On every hole, each team member may throw a tee shot. The team then selects one of the tee shots to play for the next shot. Both members of the team then throw from that position. This process is repeated until the disc is holed.

Sign up your team online today.

17th Annual Santa Sunday

Celebrate the arrival of winter and the upcoming holiday season all while raising money for a good cause with Sunday River's very own Santa Sunday.

For this festive event, 250 pre-registered Santas arrive to the resort in full attire and with a donation in hand in order to schuss down the lower slopes of South Ridge. Not only is this event photo-worthy and has been featured on the likes of the Travel Channel, but it's for a good cause too. Last year, the in hand donations made by participating Santas helped raise over $3,000 for the Sunday River Community Fund.

To register for the 17th Annual Santa Sunday, check back on Monday, November 28. We'll open up registration at noon on the dot, and this event typically fills up within minutes. If you make the cut, you'll receive a confirmation email from  us! In the meantime, make like one of Santa's little elves and book your December ski and stay package now.

All pre-registered participants can check-in on Sunday, December 4, between 7:30-10:30AM at South Ridge lodge. Santas who participate in the 11AM photo shoot will receive an additional lift ticket valid through December 16, 2016. The photo shoot will take place slopeside at South Ridge and will last approximately 45 minutes. If you have any questions, email events@sundayriver.com.

Rules: Pre-registered participants must arrive at South Ridge check-in wearing all of the following items: a red Santa hat with white pompom, a red Santa jacket, red Santa pants, a Santa beard, and a $15 (or more) donation to the Sunday River Community Fund.

The lift ticket you receive at check-in is only valid until 11AM. To continue skiing or riding for the day, you will need to show up at the scheduled photo shoot at 11AM slopeside at South Ridge dressed in your Santa attire. At the conclusion of the photo shoot, a ticket valid through December 16, 2016, will be issued.

Pre-registration is required and will begin at 12PM on Monday, November 28, 2016. There are a limited number of spots open, and registration can only be completed online.

Mini Mountain Challenge

For those new to the Mini Mountain Challenge, get ready – it’ll probably be the most specular display of fun (and funny) kid grit that you’ll ever witness! And yes, your kids are almost always tougher then than you.

The Mini Mountain Challenge is similar to the adult’s Tough Mountain Challenge, but designed for kids ages 4 through 12, and it’s all about having fun and getting as dirty as “little humanly” possible. Kids can expect a course that includes uphill and downhill running, combined with dirt, mud, fun obstacles, snowguns, and more!

Please note that the Mini Mountain Challenge is organized into three heats: 10AM for ages 10-12, 10:30AM for ages 7-9, and and 11AM for ages 4-6. Course length and obstacles will vary for each age group.
