Tough Mountain Challenge

Tough Mountain Challenge - Sunday River, July 29, 2017

If you want to run 10 miles in the company of 10,000 other people and wait in half-hour lines at obstacles you will find plenty of events where you will do just that. If you want to suffer for hours and risk life and limb, you can find those races, too. But if you're looking for something different - something as fun as it is tough without the ego and the crowds - welcome to the Tough Mountain Challenge!

THE RACE

Based at Sunday River Resort in Western Maine, the Tough Mountain Challenge is an adventure obstacle race that tackles alpine terrain throws in natural and man-made challenges. It's just four miles in length, but when you're running up a mountain under an arsenal of snowguns or scrambling through the mud it will feel much longer and live up to its name.  The Tough Mountain Challenge is a timed event, but it's not about whether you finish first or last - it's about testing yourself and pushing your limits then celebrating your accomplishments once you've crossed the finish line.

The Tough Mountain Challenge is limited to fixed number number of competitors in each heat to keep the race from feeling too crowded and ensure everyone has a great time.  For kids we also run a Mini Mountain Challenge.

THE VENUE

Tough Mountain Challenge is based at South Ridge Lodge, Sunday RIver, and spectators will be within walking distance of many of the most popular obstacles. The lodge is open all day with seating, restrooms, food, bag storage and other amenities. Parking is plentiful and free.

In addition to the event, you will find a wide array of activities including chairlift rides, ziplines, hiking and more right at the venue. If you'd like to make it a full weekend we offer lodging, golf, a spa and more.

LODGING

Sunday River offers two-full service hotels complete with pools, restaurants, and health clubs, plus a comfortable inn located right at the resort and within minutes of the venue. Lodging is available in the Snow Cap Inn and in the Grand Summit Hotel or Jordan Hotel. Learn more at Sunday RIver Lodging .

Pond-A-Palooza

Pond-A-Palooza

April 8, 2017 - Sunday River, Newry

What's spring at a ski resort without pond skimming? The last two years, Pond-A-Palooza has featured a double pond, proving tricky for all competitors and we plan to keep the surprises going during this Passholder Weekend staple, too.

Registation is free but head to the Welcome Center at South Ridge Lodge to be sure to secure your spot - 9:30am - 11am. The event gets wet and wild at 12pm on the slopes of South Ridge. Costumes weigh heavily on your score so come suited up in anything but a wetsuit (unless you're a wimp!)

Prizes include a 2017/2018 Gold New England Pass,  SPY goggles, Under Armour swag and more.

You'll find lodging specials all weekend as well as special deals for season passholders as part of our Annual Passholder Weekend - including a free BBQ on Sunday!

17th Annual Santa Sunday

Celebrate the arrival of winter and the upcoming holiday season all while raising money for a good cause with Sunday River's very own Santa Sunday.

For this festive event, 250 pre-registered Santas arrive to the resort in full attire and with a donation in hand in order to schuss down the lower slopes of South Ridge. Not only is this event photo-worthy and has been featured on the likes of the Travel Channel, but it's for a good cause too. Last year, the in hand donations made by participating Santas helped raise over $3,000 for the Sunday River Community Fund.

To register for the 17th Annual Santa Sunday, check back on Monday, November 28. We'll open up registration at noon on the dot, and this event typically fills up within minutes. If you make the cut, you'll receive a confirmation email from  us! In the meantime, make like one of Santa's little elves and book your December ski and stay package now.

All pre-registered participants can check-in on Sunday, December 4, between 7:30-10:30AM at South Ridge lodge. Santas who participate in the 11AM photo shoot will receive an additional lift ticket valid through December 16, 2016. The photo shoot will take place slopeside at South Ridge and will last approximately 45 minutes. If you have any questions, email events@sundayriver.com.

Rules: Pre-registered participants must arrive at South Ridge check-in wearing all of the following items: a red Santa hat with white pompom, a red Santa jacket, red Santa pants, a Santa beard, and a $15 (or more) donation to the Sunday River Community Fund.

The lift ticket you receive at check-in is only valid until 11AM. To continue skiing or riding for the day, you will need to show up at the scheduled photo shoot at 11AM slopeside at South Ridge dressed in your Santa attire. At the conclusion of the photo shoot, a ticket valid through December 16, 2016, will be issued.

Pre-registration is required and will begin at 12PM on Monday, November 28, 2016. There are a limited number of spots open, and registration can only be completed online.

Mini Mountain Challenge

For those new to the Mini Mountain Challenge, get ready – it’ll probably be the most specular display of fun (and funny) kid grit that you’ll ever witness! And yes, your kids are almost always tougher then than you.

The Mini Mountain Challenge is similar to the adult’s Tough Mountain Challenge, but designed for kids ages 4 through 12, and it’s all about having fun and getting as dirty as “little humanly” possible. Kids can expect a course that includes uphill and downhill running, combined with dirt, mud, fun obstacles, snowguns, and more!

Please note that the Mini Mountain Challenge is organized into three heats: 10AM for ages 10-12, 10:30AM for ages 7-9, and and 11AM for ages 4-6. Course length and obstacles will vary for each age group.
