Runners and Beer Drinkers Unite

Fitness and fun will come together this weekend at Portland’s Edward Payson Park at the Craft Brew Races. On Saturday, the national running and craft beer festival series will return to Portland on August 18th for the fifth consecutive year. A portion of the proceeds from the Portland Craft Brew Race will be donated to the Maine Brewer’s Guild.

“We’re excited to be back in Portland this year for the fifth annual event,” says Matt Gray, President of Gray Matter Marketing, which produces the event series. “Portland was the first city where our team hosted a Craft Brew Races event. Maine has a vibrant craft brewing scene, and we enjoy seeing new and old favorite breweries  join in on the fun.”

The Portland Craft Brew Race course is 3.1 mile/5K run (or walk), following a full loop of Portland’s Back Cove. The course follows Baxter Blvd. and the Back Cove Trail, featuring scenic, waterfront views throughout. Prizes are on the line for top three male and female runners, largest team, largest brewery team, and fastest team.

The race finishes just steps from the beer festival location. At the festival, in addition to included beer samples at the festival, water, Polar Seltzer and Kind Snacks will be available to runners. Food vendors will also be on site. Designated driver and festival-only tickets are available.

The run starts at noon, with the festival doors opening at 12:30. All 5K participants and festival-goers receive a pint glass and entry to the festival — including beer sampling, live music, vendors and food trucks selling onsite. All designated driver ticket-holders receive a different bracelet at registration, and are welcome to enjoy the festival, designated snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages. The event is 21+ only.

More than 30 breweries will be pouring samples of their brews at the festival, in addition to food and product vendors. Visit craftbrewraces.com for a full vendor list and tickets.

Of the vendors, there are 18 Maine-based breweries participating in the event:

Allagash Brewing Company (Portland)
Definitive Brewing Company (Portland)
Liberty Craft Brewing (Liberty)
News-capes Brewing (Portland)
Geary Brewing Co. (Portland)

Runners will then pass along the water side of the Eastern Promenade to the east and south. At mile 5, runners will turn back to the north and west, encountering the course’s only significant elevation as they head up and down Munjoy Hill on the Eastern Promenade. The route then joins the Back Cove Trail again before heading back into Payson Park for the finish and race after-party!

Presented by Benchmark Real Estate, this race gives young people ages 5-12 an opportunity to participate in the fast growing world of multi-sport racing. The run, bike, run format of a duathlon is fun and approachable, a great race for non-swimmers and triathletes alike. All young duathletes will finish the race with a smile on their face, a medal around their neck, and a boost of self-confidence and pride. This exciting event includes two waves, a bike/run short course for 5-8 year olds and run/bike/run long course for 8-12 year olds. And new this year, a 3-5 year old bike only race (balance bikes welcome) after the official race is done.

Saturday, July 27th from 12pm-3pm at Cyclemania, 65 Cove Street, Portland. We strongly encourage everyone to pick up their packets on Saturday.

Transition will be at the field in front of Payson Park with separate transition areas for each race. Bike and run courses are on Baxter Boulevard and the Back Cove Trail. The race course will be closed to vehicle traffic.
