Maine Vets 5K

The seventh annual Maine Vets 5K will be held 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 at Memorial Park in Scarborough; proceeds go to the Maine Veterans' Homes Scarborough Recreation Fund. Participants have raised more than $20,000 in the life of the race.

This 3.1-mile USATF certified course is the 2019 Road Runners Club of America Eastern Region Championship. The route is well marked with arrows and mile markers; a water stop is located at the halfway point.

What began in 2013 with 65 participants, has grown throughout the years; more than 450 people registered for the 2018 event. A free Kids Fun Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. The first 100 children registered will receive a T-shirt and medal. The first 400 people registered for the 5K will receive T-shirts and canvas totes filled with goodies. They will also be registered to win our grand prize raffle.

Awards will be given to the first and second overall male and female runners, along with first- and second-place recognition in 10-year age groups. The event also includes a wheelchair division with first and second place awards, first and second place veteran (male/female), fastest employee (male/female) and first and second place team category.

Registration is $20 (day of registration). Participants who preregistered can pickup packets at Maine Veterans' Home, 290 US Route 1, Scarborough) 7 am. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 or starting at 7:45 a.m. Sunday in Memorial Park (1 Durant Drive, Scarborough). Runners may want to allow time to bring T-shirt/tote bag back to car; parking is at Scarborough High School, 1/10 of a mile from Memorial Park.

Refreshments in the park will include bagels from Union Bagel, doughnuts from Holy Donut, bananas, granola bars, yogurt, and homemade chocolate chip cookies by Cathy Koenig. Coffee, water and Gatorade will also be available.

Maine Marimba Ensemble will provide entertainment.

The race was founded to honor Vietnam veteran James O'Brien, also a volunteer at MVH, who passed away from pancreatic cancer.

Event is pet, stroller and wheelchair friendly.

Maine Veterans’ Homes, a nonprofit organization, seeks cash sponsors and item sponsors; 400 tote bags filled with contributed items will be handed out to runners. Items donated before include hand sanitizer, pens, water bottles and more.
