The Greater Portland region extends from the waters and nearby islands of Casco Bay; heading north to include the trails and fields of Freeport; south to nearby beaches bordering Old Orchard Beach; west to the farmlands of Gray/New Gloucester with mountain bike and ski trails a scenic, short drive just beyond...

A four-season destination, this area boasts venues suited to outfit a variety of sports and has hosted world-class athletes in events that are now known across the nation. The region, home to nearly one-quarter of Maine's total population, will attract competitors and spectators alike for events held here.

Professional and amateur baseball, basketball and hockey; triathlons, marathons/half marathons and road races to include the Beach to Beacon; obstacle courses designed for a variety of terrain; mud challenges; boating tournaments and US Region I Soccer are just some of the happenings in the Greater Portland sports scene.


Portland is Maine’s largest metropolitan city and is located just 3 miles from Maine’s major airport, the Portland International Jetport. The city is surrounded by Casco Bay and is still very much a working waterfront. This bustling city is currently home to two semi-pro sports teams — the Maine Red Claws which is the D-League affiliate to the Boston Celtics and has the home court advantage at the Portland Expo; Hadlock Field hosts the Portland Sea Dogs which is the double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox and offers a “mini- Fenway” atmosphere.  The Cross Insurance Arena, formerly the Cumberland County Civic Center, has 34,500 square feet of space and 6,000 seats, hosts events such as the University of Maine men's ice hockey and the Ice Breaker Invitational, was home arena for 23 seasons to the AHL Portland Pirates and welcomes a variety of top name concerts and special events during all four seasons.   

This charming city offers state-of-the-art arenas, venues and universities, and certainly runs the gamut for the types of sporting events that could be hosted right in the city. Its unique terrain is also more than ideal for road races, regattas, triathlons, island-to-mainland swim competitions and urban obstacle courses.
