Maine's Kennebec Valley

Maine's Kennebec Valley — unmatched for the outdoor sportsman.

Maine's Kennebec Valley region is an outdoor and individual sportsman’s paradise, the original four-season recreation destination, offering virtually endless sporting opportunities to explore.

Encompassing Kennebec and Somerset County, Maine's Kennebec Valley spans a narrow but tall swath of the state from just south of the state capital at Augusta, north along the Kennebec River to the Canadian border. Riverside communities such as Gardiner, Hallowell, Waterville, Skowhegan, The Forks & Jackman call our region home. Our famous resort areas (Belgrade Lakes, China Lakes and Winthrop Lakes) are where Mainers (and Mainers at heart) spend seemingly endless summer days on cool deep waters.

Sporting pursuits are limited only inasmuch as by the season. Winter offers our renowned ice fishing and the most easily accessible — and perhaps finest — trail system in the east for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Spring brings native brook trout fly fishing; while summer encourages endless individual sports including hiking (the Appalachian Trail crosses through), ATV trail riding, canoeing and kayaking, (the very new) whitewater surfing, mountain biking, climbing, boating, bass fishing, golf, sport shooting and whitewater rafting on the Dead and Kennebec Rivers. Autumn brings the timeless traditions that come with game hunting.

The capital of Maine, Augusta provides a great launching point for both the facilities of the city and the millions of acres of sporting opportunities of central and northern Maine.

The area boasts the Augusta Civic Center, historically the site of state championship basketball competitions and other big state sporting and other events, and the Kennebec Valley Ice Arena, bringing year round ice access to central Maine. Within the city, facilities also include the Kennebec Valley YMCA pool, the Kennebec Rail Trail, and the Quarry Road Recreation Area and Quarry Run Disc Golf, and these, coupled with Augusta’s proximity to the facilities of Colby College, give the area great sites for any athletic activity.

Being the seat of state government and home to a great many Maine businesses, Augusta has the infrastructure to support large-scale events in its hotels and restaurants. Located in the middle of Central Maine with easy access to lakes, ponds, and the Kennebec River, there are infinite possibilities for outdoor recreation like canoeing, boating, ice skating, fishing, sailing, and whitewater rafting.

Augusta State Airport provides regional flights to the area, but the city is also located 59 miles from the Portland Jetport and 77 miles from Bangor International Airport, granting visitors a very central location to host events.
