New England’s Largest Pickleball Tournament To Come to Portland

Competitors from across Maine and the country will travel to Portland, Maine June 23-26, when the city is host to the 2016 Atlantic Regional Pickleball Tournament. The tournament is one of eight regional events around the country sanctioned by the USA Pickleball Association.

From all early indications, this will be the largest pickleball tournament ever held in New England, said Rocky Clark, the Atlantic Regional Director, tournament director and resident of Portland.

More than 170 players have registered for the event, with two months still to go before the June 1 deadline. Three hundred players are expected.

The tournament will be held indoors at the Racket & Fitness Center in Portland. Nine tennis courts will be taped and lined to create 24 pop-up pickleball courts for three full days of play. Play will be in age groups and ability levels, so while there will be plenty of advanced play, intermediates and novices are encouraged to sign up. Spectators are welcome.

Maine is currently ranked #2 in the country (behind Arizona) for USAPA members per capita. It is estimated there are now over 700 players enjoying the sport in Maine, from north of Bangor to Sanford.

The sport’s popularity has exploded in recent years. The USAPA estimates that there are 3,000,000 of players of all ages across the country and more than 4,000 places to play nationwide.

Pickleball is played with a paddle and perforated (wiffle) ball on a badminton-sized court, with a 34-inch net. It resembles a mix of pingpong and tennis, with scoring akin to volleyball, but pickleball has its own rules and strategies.

The tournament’s kickoff event will be a sunset cruise on Casco Bay Lines’ "Bay Mist" on Thursday, June 23 for 240 players and friends of pickleball.
