WILDLANDS ADVENTURE CHALLENGE TO TAKE PLACE OCTOBER 6, 2018

Orland, Maine - The Wildlands Adventure Challenge will take place for the first time on Saturday, October 6, 2018.

This inaugural event will feature a beginners' race that will give those new to adventure racing a fun yet gentle introduction to the sport, and an eight-hour race designed for those looking for a more intense challenge.

Adventure racing involves trekking, biking, and paddling, and its combination of outdoor fun with strategy has made the sport popular globally, with recent world championships taking place in Australia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Wyoming, U.S.A.

“If you can walk or jog a 5K and paddle one mile, you will be more than prepared for the beginners’ race,” Race Co-Director, Kate White said. “The eight-hour course is designed to be more of a challenge, with longer distances and more navigational components, as well as a mountain biking section. However, this race is still appropriate for the outdoorsy, beginner racer since the more difficult routes will be optional.”

The beginners' race will last between one and three hours and will include hiking and canoeing in provided boats. For those seeking a bigger challenge, the eight-hour race will including hiking, canoeing, and mountain biking.

The race is hosted by the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust and all proceeds from the race will benefit the trust. The course will be designed by the members of Strong Machine Adventure Racing, a nationally ranked adventure race team based in Portland, Maine, and the organizers of the Maine Summer Adventure Race, the third edition of which took place on June 16, 2018, in Jefferson, Maine.

Prices for the event are race entry which includes a swag bag, post-race pizza and drinks, canoe and paddle rental, prizes and giveaways. The 8-hour race is $80 per adult racer and $40 per racer under 18 years of age. The beginner race is $40 per adult racer and $20 per racer under 18 years old. The race will be sanctioned by the United States Adventure Racing Association and will count as part of its points series.
